Located on the UR-CST Campus of the University of Rwanda, Kigali, ICTP-EAIFR is an international hub of research excellence, poised to become one of the most important physics institutes in Africa. It is a partner institute of the Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP), and is also a Category 2 UNESCO institute.
Since 2023, ICTP-EAIFR and ISM-CNR thanks to the contribute of Dr Andrea Marini, senior researcher at ISM-CNR, initiated relations through two main actions: the 7th African School on Electronic Structure methods and Applications ASESMA, 12-23 June 2023, and the teaching in the course of Many Body Physics in the Master in Physics.
Through the Agreement approved by the Board of Directors at the meeting of 25 June 2024 and the protocol signed by the parties, the National Research Council and the ICTP-EAIFR intend to strengthen the aforementioned collaboration in order to carry out initiatives that concern topics of mutual interest, focused particularly on higher education in the field of physics and on the exchange of experiences and scientific results.
The specific objectives consist of:
• scientific exchanges through mobility of ISM CNR researchers in Africa and Africans in Italy for teaching and study and training periods
• support for the advanced thematic training offered by the ICTP-EAIFR through the financing of scholarships aimed at deserving students from African countries.
This Agreement has a duration of two years, rewable, and from a strategic point of view the project is in line with the contents of the current CNR Reorganisation and Relaunch Plan, which in its “vision” for the next few years includes Africa among the non-EU research systems with which to start/strengthen partnerships.
The staff involved in the project is made up of Dr. Andrea Marini (Responsible of the Agreement / project), Dr. Carmen Gargiulo (Coordinator), with the collaboration of the Institute administrative offices.
