Latin American Symposium on Solid State Physics

Barranquilla (Colombia), 2024, 21-26 October

The XXV Latin American Symposium on Solid State Physics (SLAFES) from October 23 to 26, 2024, at Universidad del Atlántico, Sede Norte, Puerto Colombia is a prominent event in Latin America for exchanging information and discussing innovations in Solid State Physics.

Join international experts at SLAFES 2024 are expected to explore the latest advancements and contributions in this strategic area of knowledge.

On the 23rd October “Opening Plenary: Ab–Initio simulations of equilibrium and out–of–equilibrium phenomena in complex materials: combining High–Performance computational tools with advanced theoretical approaches” the talk of Andrea MARINI (Istituto di Struttura della Materia, National Research Council, Italy) is scheduled to take place.

The Symposium includes an ICTP meeting, a two-and-a-half-day hands-on workshop along and aims to enhance the capabilities of scientists in Latin America by complementing the efforts of local networks like SCALAC, Red-Clara, and LaRedCCA2 in utilizing high-performance computing (HPC) in materials science.

Moreover, it addresses inequalities and promotes the adoption of HPC methodologies by covering topics such as modern parallel architectures, practical skills for non-IT experts in using open-source scientific codes, running hybrid programs with accelerators, and hands-on experience in configuring and managing calculations for materials research and visualization.

The workshop offers an intensive program that balances theoretical knowledge with practical application, ensuring that participants gain a solid understanding of how to apply HPC techniques to their research endeavours in materials science.
