The standard Hamiltonian in electronic structure calculations does not explicitly include the transverse electromagnetic interactions outside its explicit description.
In this talk Andrea Marini will introduce the transverse matter Hamiltonian, a low energy gauge-invariant extension that incorporates these interactions without resorting to the full machinery of quantum electrodynamics.
It will be discussed how this framework opens new avenues for studying optical adsorption, magnetic phenomena and interactions involving electronic and phononic currents, broadening the theoretical tools available to describe the electromagnetic properties of materials.
The talk will be hosted by the Key Laboratory of Computational Physical Sciences of the Fudan University in Shanghai, on November 2026, the 2nd.
