Nairobi (Kenya), 2025, 7-11 July
The first two-week intensive workshop taking place in the framework of the APhRICA program has began. The theme is: “Methodological School on Density Functional Theory”.
The initiative follows the APhRICA Launch on 2024, December 6 in Nairobi and is organised by ICTP-EAIFR (International Centre for Theoretical Physics – East African Institute for Fundamental Research) in collaboration with TU-K (Technical University of Kenya).
Hosted by the Department of Physics, Earth and Environmental Sciences of TU-K, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Benedict Mutua, presided over the opening ceremony.
The workshop is aimed at equipping students with rigorous methodological training in condensed matter physics while equipping participants with advanced theoretical insights into Density Functional Theory (DFT), which is a crucial computational method for determining the structural and interactive properties of atoms, molecules, and crystalline materials.
The workshop has brought together 17 postgraduate participants, comprising 10 from Kenyan universities, both MSc and PhD students and the 7 Master students supported by the APhRICA program from the ICTP-EAIFR. These include students from Peru, Nigeria, Uganda, Egypt, Syria, and Rwanda.
Dr. Matteo Gatti (École Polytechnique) and Dr. Andrea Marini (CNR) are the two international speakers.
